Rasrā is a town in Ballia district, in the far east of Uttar Pradesh, on the level alluvial country between the Ganges and the Ghaghara. From above it looks like a dense knot of short, irregular lanes. Roads from the surrounding villages lead into it, and a railway line runs past the town, giving the map one firm straight stroke among the softer curves.
Around the built-up core, the map opens into a patchwork of field boundaries, small ponds and village clusters that thin out toward the horizon. This is a river-shaped landscape, even where no river is drawn. Old channels, low embankments and the gentle drainage of the plain show up as faint lines. In black and white, those lines look almost like pencil sketching.
