Rheinbach lies in the Rhein-Sieg district of North Rhine-Westphalia, southwest of Bonn, where the Rhine lowlands begin to rise toward the Eifel hills. The historic centre still follows the line of its medieval walls, and the Hexenturm, a surviving tower of the old fortifications, is a local landmark. From above, the compact core is clearly visible within a ring of newer residential areas.
After the Second World War, glassmakers from northern Bohemia settled in Rheinbach, and the town has been known for glass ever since. It has a dedicated glass museum and a vocational school for glass technology. Rheinbach is also home to a campus of the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences, adding modern buildings to the town's outer districts.
