Roskilde lies at the southern tip of Roskilde Fjord on Zealand, about half an hour west of Copenhagen. It was one of the most important towns of medieval Denmark, and its cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has been the burial church of Danish monarchs for centuries. On the map, the old town sits on higher ground with the cathedral at its heart.
From there the streets slope north toward the fjord, where the harbour and the Viking Ship Museum hold the waterfront. The museum displays five Viking ships recovered from the fjord bed. Beyond the centre, residential districts and green spaces spread in several directions, with the railway cutting across the south.

Harbour and fjord
The town slopes down to a small harbour at the tip of Roskilde Fjord, where the water narrows into a long channel on the northern edge of the map.

On the waterfront, the museum holds Viking-era ships raised from the fjord, placing the town's long maritime past right at the water's edge.
