Ruvo di Puglia stands inland from Bari on the low limestone plateau of the Murge, surrounded by olive groves, vineyards and almond orchards. From above, the historic centre is a tight, roughly rounded knot of narrow lanes, clearly set apart from the more regular blocks that grew up around it, with broader streets wrapping around the old core.
The town's best-known landmark is its Romanesque cathedral, with a richly carved facade and rose window. Ruvo was also the ancient settlement of Rubi, and its tombs yielded a large collection of painted Greek vases, many now displayed at the Jatta National Archaeological Museum, including a celebrated krater showing the myth of Talos.
