Sabie lies on the Mpumalanga escarpment in north-eastern South Africa, where the highveld drops toward the lowveld. On a map the town is a small, tidy grid in a green, steep landscape. Plantations cover the slopes, and mountain roads bend around ridges and valleys in long switchbacks.
The town began with a gold find in the late nineteenth century and later became a centre of commercial forestry, as the pine and eucalyptus plantations around it show. The area is also known for its waterfalls, including Lone Creek, Bridal Veil and Mac-Mac Falls, and it lies on the scenic route toward the Blyde River Canyon.
