Schleswig sits at the inner end of the Schlei, a long, narrow arm of the Baltic that reaches far inland. On a map the town traces the northern shoreline in a shallow curve. The water lies open to the south and east, and the built-up streets thin out toward fields and woodland to the north. The Schlei itself reads as a pale ribbon that widens and narrows as it heads toward the sea.
The historic centre clusters around St. Peter's Cathedral, whose spire marks the old town's densest block of lanes. To the west, Gottorf Castle stands on its own island, joined to the mainland by causeways. Near the shore, the Holm fishing quarter keeps its small houses around a circular cemetery, and the ring shows up clearly even at small scales. Few towns of this size give a map this many distinct shapes.
Across the Schlei lies the site of Hedeby, one of the main trading towns of the Viking Age, marked today by its semicircular earthwork. Together with the Danevirke fortifications it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018. West of the centre, Gottorf Castle occupies an island surrounded by water and reached by causeways. It gives the western edge of town a clear, self-contained outline.
The Schlei inlet
The Schlei runs from Schleswig toward the Baltic as a long, irregular inlet. It fills much of the poster with open space, framed by curving shorelines, coves and small peninsulas.
