Sciacca lies on the southwest coast of Sicily in the province of Agrigento, facing the Strait of Sicily. The town rises from its harbour in a series of terraces. On the map the streets form horizontal bands that step up the slope, linked by stairways and short climbing lanes. Behind it rises Monte Kronio, a hill whose caves give off natural steam.
Sciacca has been known since antiquity for its thermal waters, and later for its ceramics, which still fill shop fronts in the old town. The historic centre keeps traces of its walls and gates, with churches and palazzi along the main streets. Below, the harbour is home to one of the island's working fishing fleets, and its piers draw sharp shapes against the sea.
