Seddouk lies in the Béjaïa province of Algeria, on the hillsides that rise from the Soummam valley, one of the main corridors through Kabylie. On a map the town is a cluster of streets stepping up the slope, with the broad, flat valley floor below and higher, more broken ground behind it. The contrast between plain and hillside shapes the whole composition.
The name is closely tied to Cheikh Aheddad, the religious leader whose zawiya was at Seddouk and who called Kabylie to join the great uprising of 1871 against French rule. Today the town is the administrative centre of its district. The surrounding villages, linked by narrow winding roads, sit across the hills in the small, dense knots typical of Kabylie.
