Silkeborg lies in central Jutland, in one of Denmark's rare hilly and wooded areas. The Gudenå, the country's longest river, runs through the town and links a chain of lakes around it. From above, the built-up area is broken up by water and forest, with the town centre on the low land between lakes and neighbourhoods on the higher ground around them.
The town grew around a paper mill founded in the nineteenth century, and today it is known for its museums. The Silkeborg Museum displays the Tollund Man, a remarkably well-preserved Iron Age bog body found nearby, while Museum Jorn holds works by the painter Asger Jorn. Himmelbjerget, one of Denmark's best-known hills, is a short distance away.
