Sürmene lies on the eastern Black Sea coast of Turkey, east of Trabzon. Its map is shaped by a pinch of land. The town stretches along a thin strip between the sea and steep hills, with the coastal highway and shoreline running almost side by side. Behind them, streets climb quickly into the slopes.
Streams come down from the mountains in narrow valleys, each one drawing a line of roads and houses inland. The hillsides are known for tea gardens and hazelnut groves. The town is famous across Turkey for its hand-forged knives, the Sürmene bıçağı, and for the Memiş Ağa Mansion, a fortified nineteenth-century house near the coast.
