Sykiés lies on the slopes directly above central Thessaloniki, northwest of the Ano Poli upper town and its Byzantine walls. On a map it reads as a very compact, steep neighbourhood. Narrow streets run tightly across the hillside, and building blocks fill nearly every space up to the edge of the Seich Sou forest on the ridge above.
Much of the town grew in the twentieth century, when refugees from Asia Minor settled on these hillsides after 1922. The later development is still dense but kept close to the original lots. The Heptapyrgion fortress, part of Thessaloniki's old defences, lies nearby, and the views from the upper streets look down over the city to the Thermaic Gulf.
