Tandahimba sits on the Makonde Plateau in southern Tanzania, in the Mtwara Region near the border with Mozambique. From above, the town is an open cluster of streets around a few main roads. Past the last houses the grid thins into scattered homesteads and field tracks, and the flat top of the plateau keeps the pattern even in every direction.
The district is known for cashew nuts, and much of the surrounding land is given over to smallholder groves. On a map this shows up as quiet space around the town instead of hard lines, with footpaths and minor roads connecting outlying villages. To the south the plateau drops towards the Ruvuma River, the natural boundary between Tanzania and Mozambique.

A handful of main roads leave the centre for neighbouring district towns and villages. On the poster they are the strongest lines, running out from the compact core.
