Termini Imerese lies on the north coast of Sicily, east of Palermo. Its name recalls the Thermae Himerenses, the thermal springs used since antiquity, and the Greek colony of Himera, which stood nearby until it was destroyed in 409 BC. People from Himera resettled here, and the town kept both the springs and the name.
The town is divided into two parts. Termini Alta, the upper town, sits on a ridge with a historic centre of churches, piazzas and a belvedere looking over the sea. Termini Bassa, the lower town, stretches along the shore around the thermal baths and the port. For decades the town was also known for a large car factory, which closed in 2011.
