Vác lies on the left bank of the Danube about 35 kilometres north of Budapest, where the river leaves the Danube Bend and heads south toward the capital. On the map the old town forms a compact core close to the water. Long streets run parallel to the river, and residential districts extend inland and north toward the slopes of Naszály.
The town is one of Hungary's oldest episcopal seats, and its bishopric dates from the eleventh century. Its centre was largely rebuilt in baroque style in the eighteenth century. It contains a large neoclassical cathedral and a stone triumphal arch put up in 1764 for a visit by Empress Maria Theresa, the only arch of its kind in the country.
