Wiehl lies in the Oberbergischer Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia, east of Cologne, in the hilly, forested landscape of the Bergisches Land. The town takes its name from the small Wiehl river, and from above its centre follows the valley floor, while surrounding villages occupy side valleys and hilltops connected by winding roads.
Wiehl is known for its limestone stalactite cave, the Wiehler Tropfsteinhöhle, open to visitors, and as the home of the axle and chassis manufacturer BPW. Industrial sites in the valley contrast on the map with the dense woodland on the slopes and the scattered farmhouses and hamlets typical of this part of Germany.
