Ystad lies on the south coast of Skåne, facing the Baltic Sea, and a long, gently curving shoreline frames its map. The historic centre sits just back from the harbour. It is a tight cluster of narrow streets and small squares that has kept much of its medieval pattern. The ferry port, with regular connections to Bornholm, occupies the waterfront next to it.
Ystad is known for its many well-preserved half-timbered houses, St Mary's Church and the Greyfriars monastery, one of the best-preserved in Sweden. It is also the setting of Henning Mankell's Wallander novels, which brought the town international attention. Further east along the coast, the stone ship of Ales stenar stands above the sea at Kåseberga.
