This Zhongshan lies in eastern Gansu, in the loess country of the upper Wei River basin, far from the better-known city of the same name in Guangdong. The landscape here is carved by erosion into ridges, gullies and terraced slopes, and the map shows it through the way roads and villages follow the valleys and avoid the steepest ground.
The town itself is compact, with its main streets gathered where the land flattens out and a network of lanes linking it to scattered villages on the hillsides. Terraced fields have long been part of farming life in this region, and the rural roads around the town branch in fine, irregular patterns, closer to a natural drainage system than to a planned layout.
