Kita is one of Tokyo's twenty-three special wards. It stretches along the city's northern edge, where the Arakawa River forms the border with Saitama Prefecture. On a map it is long and narrow, and busy JR lines cut through it on their way between central Tokyo and the northern suburbs. Dense residential blocks, stations and a scattering of parks lie around them.
Near the northern tip, the Iwabuchi floodgate separates the Arakawa from the Sumida River. The old red sluice gate, built in the 1920s, is preserved beside its newer replacement. The wide flood channel and its grassy banks give this end of the map a broad, open character, very different from the tight streets around Akabane Station inland.
To the south, Asukayama Park in Ōji has been a cherry-blossom spot since the eighteenth century, when the shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune had trees planted there for the public to enjoy. A Kita map poster captures the ward's mix of river edge, railway lines and green hills. Transport and flood control have shaped this part of Tokyo as much as history has.

This small hill park near Ōji Station has been planted with cherry trees since the Edo period. A short, free monorail carries visitors up from the street below.
Several JR lines run through the ward side by side, including the Keihin-Tōhoku and Saikyō lines. They form broad parallel bands that divide Kita's neighbourhoods.

Aiheā Kita
Kita is home to commuters, families and long-time residents of Akabane, Ōji and Jūjō, neighbourhoods with strong local identities. A map of the ward can mark a first Tokyo apartment or a childhood street without falling back on the usual skyline image.
Change the title and subtitle to name your neighbourhood or add a date, and edit the coordinates line. Five styles are available: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. You can get them as $9 HD files in six sizes or as a printed poster.
