Minato City covers a stretch of central Tokyo running from the inland hills around Roppongi and Akasaka down to the shore of Tokyo Bay. From above it is one of the densest street networks in the capital. Small lanes wind over uneven ground, and wide avenues and elevated expressways cut straight through them. The waterfront is built from straight-edged reclaimed land and canals.
The ward's name means harbour, and the bay is the key to how it looks on a map. Piers, warehouses and rail yards line the Shibaura and Shinagawa waterfront. The Rainbow Bridge crosses to the artificial islands of Odaiba, part of which also belongs to Minato. Further inland, green spaces such as Shiba Park and the grounds of Zojo-ji temple break up the pattern of blocks.
Minato holds Tokyo Tower, the office towers of Shiodome and Toranomon, and more foreign embassies than any other ward in Japan. A Minato City map poster shows how these very different areas fit together: winding residential hills, gridded business districts, rail corridors and an engineered shoreline, all within a few kilometres.

A large green space around Zojo-ji temple, next to Tokyo Tower. It forms a quiet, open patch among the tightly packed streets of the central ward.
Straight-edged piers, canals and landfill blocks along the bay contrast sharply with the curving lanes of the older hills further inland.
