Bluffton sits in South Carolina's Lowcountry, near Hilton Head Island, on high ground above the May River. The name refers to that bluff. The historic district, known locally as Old Town, stands close to the water, and much of the town's identity comes from its relationship with the river and tidal marsh.
From above, the May River winds east toward the sea, and salt marsh and creeks reach deep into the land along its banks. Old Town's small grid of streets sits beside the river, while much larger planned communities, with looping roads and cul-de-sacs, spread across the land beyond.
The Church of the Cross, a Gothic Revival church, stands on the bluff overlooking the river and is one of the town's best-known landmarks. The May River is also known for its oysters.
