Liberal sits in the far south-west of Kansas, just north of the Oklahoma line, on the flat, open High Plains. Its map is a near-perfect grid of streets aligned to the compass, set inside the larger grid of section-line roads that divide the surrounding farmland into square miles. A railroad cuts diagonally across town, one of the few lines here that refuses the right angle.
The town is known for the International Pancake Race, run every Shrove Tuesday since 1950 in friendly competition with Olney in England, with women racing a set course while flipping pancakes. Liberal also claims a link to The Wizard of Oz through Dorothy's House and its Land of Oz exhibit, a small attraction that draws travellers crossing the plains.
A Liberal map poster reads almost like a drafting exercise: straight lines, square blocks, a single diagonal and wide open edges. It suits anyone who grew up out on the plains, worked in the region's farming, meatpacking or natural gas industries, or has a soft spot for a town that races pancakes across two continents.
Streets run due north-south and east-west in regular blocks, a pattern extended into the countryside by mile-square section roads that frame the town on every side.
The railroad slices through the grid on a south-west to north-east diagonal, with the highway running alongside, the strongest directional line on the map.
The annual Shrove Tuesday race runs along a short course through the centre of town, a local tradition shared since 1950 with the English town of Olney.

Liberal's geometry looks striking on a wall, especially at 24×36″ where the grid has room to breathe. Personalise the title, add a date such as a race year or a wedding to the subtitle, and adjust the coordinates line to your own address.
Blueprint emphasises the survey-line precision, Noir gives a night-sky feel to the plains, and Classic black & white, Paper and Sand stay understated. Buy the $9 digital files to print locally, or order a matte poster with an optional wooden frame.
