Te mapa
Abu Gharaq lies in Babil Governorate in central Iraq, a short distance west of Hillah. It belongs to the flat alluvial plain between the Tigris and the Euphrates, a landscape shaped by irrigation for thousands of years. From above, the town is a modest cluster of streets among fields and orchards. Straight canals and drainage channels divide the land around it into long strips.
Roads leave the town along the embankments of these waterways, which is why many of them run perfectly straight and then turn at sharp angles. Groves of date palms form textured patches between the fields. Printed as an Abu Gharaq map poster, this network of water and roads becomes a fine, almost woven pattern around a small urban centre.
The region was part of ancient Babylonia, and the ruins of Babylon lie not far away near Hillah. Abu Gharaq itself is mainly an agricultural community. Its map is less about monuments than about the working geometry of an irrigated landscape, the kind that has supported settlement on this plain since antiquity.
Straight canals and ditches cross the surrounding land in parallel lines. They divide it into narrow fields and give the map its strongest repeated pattern.
Dense date-palm plantations sit between the fields and along the waterways, appearing as softer, irregular areas beside the geometric farmland.
The town's own streets form a small, fairly tight cluster, with main roads leading out toward Hillah and the neighbouring villages.
