Te mapa
Najaf stands on a ridge at the edge of the Western Desert, a short distance west of the Euphrates. From above, everything focuses on the old city. Its dense lanes surround the Imam Ali Shrine, the burial place of Ali ibn Abi Talib and one of the holiest sites in Shia Islam. A ring road traces the line of the old city walls around this core.
North of the old city lies Wadi al-Salam, which is considered one of the largest cemeteries in the world. On the map, it appears as a huge area of fine, closely spaced paths with almost no streets, unlike any other part of the city. To the west, the land drops toward the low depression known as the Sea of Najaf, and the buildings stop at the escarpment.
A Najaf map poster shows a city that has been a centre of religious learning for centuries. Its seminaries have trained scholars from across the Muslim world. Newer districts extend to the south and east toward Kufa in a regular grid, and wide roads link it to the neighbouring city. Even so, the old circular core remains the focal point.

The vast cemetery north of the old city forms a large, finely patterned area unlike anything else on the map.
To the west, the city stops at the edge of the ridge, where the land drops toward the low Sea of Najaf depression.
