Te mapa
Al Diwaniyah is the capital of Al-Qadisiyah governorate, in the flat alluvial plain of central Iraq. The city lies along a branch of the Euphrates, and water decides its shape. The river channel runs through the centre, streets line up on both banks, and bridges carry roads across. Irrigation canals spread outwards into the surrounding fields.
On an Al Diwaniyah map poster the city is compact. There is a central area of dense blocks near the river and newer residential districts with more regular grids around it. At the edges, the street network quickly thins into straight farm tracks and canals, creating a fine pattern typical of Mesopotamian farmland, where rice and grain are grown.
The governorate has deep roots. Ancient Nippur, one of the most important religious centres of Sumer, lies in the same province. Today Al Diwaniyah serves the farming towns around it as a market and administrative centre, and it sits on the main road and railway corridor between Baghdad and southern Iraq.

Straight canals and field boundaries spread out from the edges of town. They form a fine geometric pattern across the surrounding plain.
The main road and rail line between Baghdad and the south pass the city. Their long straight alignments cut across the farmland on either side.
