Te mapa
Adrogué is the head town of Almirante Brown partido, in the southern suburbs of Greater Buenos Aires. It was founded in the 1870s on land belonging to Esteban Adrogué, who gave ground for a railway station, and the town grew around that stop on the line running south from the capital, its streets extending outward from the tracks.
What makes the map distinctive is its plan. Over the usual square blocks of the pampas lies a set of diagonal avenues, with plazas placed where they meet, a design that sets Adrogué apart from the stricter grids around it. Tree-lined streets, large older houses and gardens gave the town its long reputation as a summer retreat for families from the city.
Jorge Luis Borges spent childhood summers in Adrogué and returned to it in his writing, which gives the town a quiet literary fame. An Adrogué map poster shows the plan he walked: the station, the diagonals, the plazas and the long, straight streets that continue outward until they merge with the neighbouring suburbs.
Broad diagonals slice across the square blocks, creating sharp triangular lots and giving the poster a strong, almost star-like structure at its centre.
Where avenues meet, plazas open up as pale shapes in the street network, marking the focal points around which the town was originally planned.
The line from Buenos Aires runs through town as a firm straight stroke, with the station at the point from which Adrogué first grew.

Koteā ko Adrogué
Adrogué appeals to people who grew up among its trees and plazas, to readers of Borges, and to anyone who enjoys a street plan with a clear idea behind it. The diagonals read well at every size.
