Te mapa
Akhisar lies in Manisa province in western Turkey, on a wide, fertile plain. Its map is shaped by open ground. The town spreads out from a central core in fairly regular blocks. Main roads leave in several directions toward neighbouring towns, and the edges fade into cultivated fields. The surrounding low hills stay far enough back that the town takes a broad, even shape.
In antiquity the town was Thyatira, one of the Seven Churches of Asia named in the Book of Revelation. Remains of the ancient city are preserved in the town centre. Today Akhisar is best known for olives and olive oil, and groves cover much of the land around it. The grid of streets and the pattern of fields reflect a place that has lived from its soil for centuries.
An Akhisar map poster shows a working agricultural town. The denser centre, where the ancient site sits among later streets, contrasts with the looser outer districts. Roads leave for the rest of the Aegean hinterland. In black and white, the orderly blocks and long straight approaches give the design a quiet, well-balanced structure.
The excavated remains of ancient Thyatira sit within the modern town centre, a small open patch framed by the surrounding street blocks.
With flat ground on every side, the town spreads out evenly, and its streets fan across the plain without being pinched by hills or water.
At the outskirts, the built-up area gives way to farmland and olive groves, the crop the town is best known for across Turkey.
