Aksaray sits on the high, open steppe of Central Anatolia, between the salt flats of Tuz Gölü to the northwest and the volcanic peak of Hasan Dağı to the southeast. On a map the city is compact and self-contained, a cluster of streets on flat ground with long straight roads running out across farmland in several directions.
A small river, the Uluırmak, flows through the town, and the older quarters sit close to it, with narrower, less regular lanes.
