Al Miqdādīyah lies in Diyala Governorate, northeast of Baqubah, on the plain that stretches from the Diyala River towards the foothills near the Iranian border. From above, the town's compact centre is surrounded by a dense patchwork of orchards and palm groves.
The town was formerly known as Shahraban. The Diyala region is known for its citrus fruit and dates. The irrigated land around the town reflects that agricultural tradition, with small channels and plots pressing up against the edges of the built area.
