Te mapa
Sadr City is one of the most regularly planned places in Iraq. It lies in the north-east of Baghdad, beyond the Army Canal, and from above it looks like a grid of near-identical rectangular sectors separated by straight roads. Within each sector, the streets are tightly packed and parallel, making the district one of the most densely built parts of the capital.
The district was founded around 1959 under Abd al-Karim Qasim as al-Thawra, or Revolution City, to house migrants arriving from the rural south. It was later renamed Saddam City, and after 2003 it took the name of the Shia cleric Mohammad Sadiq al-Sadr. Its population today is well over a million.
A Sadr City map poster is almost abstract. The sectors repeat across the page in an even pattern, cut by main avenues at regular intervals, and the Army Canal forms a clear boundary on the western side. Few places show so plainly how a single plan, drawn at one moment, can shape the daily life of an entire district.
The district is divided into many rectangular sectors of similar size, separated by straight roads. The repetition gives the map a strong, almost graphic regularity.
The canal and the parkland along it run along the district's western side, a long straight line separating Sadr City from the rest of eastern Baghdad.
Within each sector, narrow residential streets run close together in parallel rows, producing a fine, tight texture across the whole district.
