Alagoa Grande is a town in the Brejo Paraibano, a band of higher, wetter country in the interior of Paraíba, in north-eastern Brazil. Unlike the flat grids of coastal towns, its streets follow the terrain, bending along valley floors and climbing where the ground allows. On the map, the centre forms an irregular knot of blocks, with roads leaving along the hillsides toward neighbouring towns.
The name means large lagoon in Portuguese. Water shaped settlement in this greener part of the state, where sugar cane long dominated the land. Alagoa Grande is the birthplace of Jackson do Pandeiro, one of the defining voices of forró and coco. It is also the hometown of Margarida Maria Alves, the rural workers' leader honoured by the Marcha das Margaridas.
