Te mapa
Albany is the largest city in southwest Georgia, built along the Flint River on a broad, level plain. The historic downtown sits close to the east bank of the river, with a regular grid of streets extending away from the water. From above, the map shows a compact older centre surrounded by wider suburban roads and highways that radiate outward across farm country.
The Flint shapes the city in quieter ways too. It has flooded Albany several times, most severely in 1994, and parts of the riverfront were later turned into parkland. On the map the river appears as a slow, meandering line crossing the city from north to south, lined by green space rather than dense building.
Albany is the birthplace of Ray Charles, remembered with a riverside plaza, and it played a significant role in the civil rights movement through the Albany Movement of the early 1960s. The area is also known for pecan growing. An Albany map poster brings together the river, the grid and the open land that surrounds them.
The river winds through the city from north to south, a soft, meandering line with parks along its banks that separates the downtown from the western side of town.
Close to the river's east bank, the historic downtown forms a compact grid of rectangular blocks, the densest and most regular part of the map.
Major roads leave the city in several directions across the plain, long straight lines that connect Albany with the surrounding farm towns and give the map a starburst structure.
