Te mapa
Savannah is one of the best-known planned cities in America. General James Oglethorpe founded it in 1733 and laid it out as a system of wards, each built around a public square, with streets and lots in a repeating module. Twenty-two of those squares survive. On a map they appear as small open cells, evenly spaced across the historic district.
The old city sits on a bluff above the Savannah River, with River Street and its warehouses along the water below. To the south the grid opens into Forsyth Park, a long rectangle with a fountain at its northern end. Beyond it the later suburbs loosen into curving streets, while marshland and river channels break up the edges of the city.
Few American street plans are as satisfying to look at as this one. A Savannah map poster turns the Oglethorpe plan into a quiet pattern of blocks and squares, with the river curving along the top edge. It works as a reminder of a honeymoon or a college year, and as a piece of urban design history in its own right.

The city's northern edge follows the Savannah River. The old cotton warehouses of River Street are built into the bluff between the water and the streets above.
South of the squares, Forsyth Park forms a long green rectangle. It is the largest open space in the historic district and a clear anchor on the map.

Koteā ko Savannah
Architects and urbanists around the world know Savannah's plan, and people who have simply walked its squares love it just as much. On a wall, the grid reads as ornament from a distance and as a guide to favourite corners up close.
