The planned grid
The 1786 plan gave Columbia broad, straight streets in a regular pattern. Printed in black and white, the downtown becomes an even field of blocks with the State House close to its centre.

Te mapa
Columbia was laid out in 1786 as a new capital for South Carolina, and the plan still shows. Its downtown is a grid of unusually wide streets, drawn on a plain square layout. The State House sits near the middle of the grid. From above, the blocks look even and orderly, and a few long avenues run straight out toward the suburbs.
The western edge is set by water. The Broad and Saluda rivers join at Columbia to form the Congaree, and together they leave a clear pale Y shape against the streets. Riverfront parks and old canal lines follow the banks. Farther west, the long, branching shoreline of Lake Murray fills the edge of a wider frame.
A Columbia map poster also records the University of South Carolina campus, which runs south of the State House. Its historic Horseshoe quad appears as a small open space among the dense blocks. Much of the city burned in 1865, near the end of the Civil War, and was rebuilt on the same grid. Few American downtowns look this regular from above.

The Broad and Saluda rivers join on the city's western side to form the Congaree. Their meeting point makes a strong shape where the grid ends at the water.
The oldest part of the University of South Carolina forms a small, recognisable quad south of the State House. Its lawn shows as a quiet gap among the downtown blocks.

Koteā ko Columbia
People who studied at the university, worked near the State House or grew up by the rivers often want a map that shows the grid and the water together. Add a personal title, a graduation year or a move-in date to the subtitle line to make the print yours.
Choose Classic black and white for sharp contrast, Blueprint for the river confluence, or Paper, Sand or Noir for a softer or darker room. The $9 digital files come in six print sizes as 300 DPI PNGs and print-ready PDFs, and a framed print can also be ordered.
