Te mapa
Charleston grew on a tapering peninsula where the Ashley and Cooper rivers meet to form a broad harbour opening onto the Atlantic. The oldest streets at the southern tip follow a grid planned in the late seventeenth century, and the city then pushed north up the peninsula, filling marshes and creeks as it went. Beyond the rivers, suburbs spread across islands and low ground laced with tidal water.
Founded in 1670, Charleston was one of the largest and wealthiest cities in colonial America. Its southern tip ends at the Battery, a seawall promenade lined with grand houses, and the pastel facades of Rainbow Row face the Cooper River nearby. Out in the harbour, Fort Sumter marks where the first shots of the Civil War were fired in April 1861.
A Charleston map poster shows why water defines the city. The peninsula narrows to a point, the long cable-stayed Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge crosses the Cooper River toward Mount Pleasant, and marsh channels break the surrounding land into countless fragments. Few American cities offer such a clean contrast between a tight historic grid and open water.
The historic district fills the narrowing southern point, where a dense grid of small blocks ends abruptly at the Battery's seawall and White Point Garden.
Opened in 2005, the cable-stayed bridge across the Cooper River draws a long, slender line toward Mount Pleasant, one of the clearest strokes on the map.
Around the city, salt marsh and winding creeks cut the land into irregular fragments, a delicate, almost lace-like pattern at the edges of the frame.

Charleston is a city of weddings, graduations and long visits, and its map carries those memories well. The peninsula shape is instantly recognisable, even to people who have only walked its streets once or twice.
