Te mapa
Raleigh was founded in 1792 on a site chosen specifically to be North Carolina's capital. From above, the original plan is still visible downtown. A regular grid centres on Union Square, where the State Capitol stands, and the surrounding squares were set aside as public space. Beyond this core, the land rolls gently, and the streets become more winding as they go farther out.
A beltline highway forms a loop around the older city and is one of the clearest lines on the map. Outside it, the suburbs spread in curving streets and cul-de-sacs among woods. Creeks such as Crabtree and Walnut wind through the city, and many are lined with the greenway trails that give Raleigh its long, narrow ribbons of park.
A Raleigh map poster also shows NC State University west of downtown, whose campus and the adjacent fairgrounds form large, open shapes. Raleigh is one of the three anchors of the Research Triangle, with Durham and Chapel Hill. Its nickname, the City of Oaks, comes from the tree canopy that covers much of the city and softens the edges of its streets.
