Te mapa
Fayetteville grew up at the head of navigation on the Cape Fear River, and the river still defines its eastern side on a map. The downtown sits on higher ground to the west, where the streets meet at one central intersection. Beyond it, suburban neighbourhoods, shopping corridors and pine-covered land spread outward across the sandy terrain of the North Carolina Sandhills.
At that central crossroads stands the Market House, built in 1832 in the middle of a traffic circle where four streets meet. It gives the downtown map an unusual focal point. The town grew from two earlier settlements, Campbellton and Cross Creek, and was later renamed after the Marquis de Lafayette.
To the northwest lies Fort Bragg, one of the largest military installations in the world, which shapes both the city's roads and its population. A Fayetteville map poster shows the contrast clearly. There is the compact historic core, the long main roads running toward the base, and the green curve of the Cape Fear on the eastern edge.
The historic Market House stands in the middle of downtown where four streets meet, a small circle at the exact centre of the old town plan.
The river bends along the eastern side of the city, and its wooded banks form a natural boundary to downtown and the districts nearby.
Broad main roads reach northwest toward the military post, stretching the city into long corridors that are clearly visible from above.
