Te mapa
Jacksonville is defined on the map by the St. Johns River. The river flows north through the city, wide and slow, then turns sharply east at downtown and runs toward the Atlantic. Several large bridges cross it near the centre, so the core of the city looks like a knot of roads tied across broad water, with neighbourhoods such as Riverside and San Marco facing each other from opposite banks.
The city is enormous in area. After consolidating with Duval County in 1968, Jacksonville became the largest city by land area in the contiguous United States. That means a map of it holds suburbs, marshes, creeks, pine forest and highways, with Interstate 295 tracing a wide loop around much of the urban area.
To the east, the Intracoastal Waterway runs parallel to the coast, and beyond it lie the beach towns on a long, straight shoreline. A Jacksonville map poster shows all of these layers together: river, marsh, waterway and ocean, with the street grid filling the land between them.
The river turns from north to east right at downtown, creating the city's defining shape and dividing its oldest neighbourhoods between the two riverbanks.
A cluster of bridges spans the St. Johns near the city centre, their long straight lines crossing the water and tying the north and south banks together.
The Intracoastal Waterway and a band of salt marsh separate the mainland from a straight Atlantic coastline lined with beach communities.

Jacksonville is a place people live in for years, often near the water, and many move there with the Navy or for work. A map of the river and its bridges is a calm way to remember a home, a base or a stretch of beach.
