Alcamo lies in western Sicily, on rising ground between the Gulf of Castellammare and Monte Bonifato. On the map, the historic centre is a fairly orderly network of streets and squares, with the castle of the Counts of Modica near the centre. Newer districts spread downhill towards the coast, while the steep, wooded mountain closes off the town to the south.
The town is linked to the beginnings of Italian literature. The thirteenth-century poet Cielo d'Alcamo wrote Rosa fresca aulentissima, one of the earliest poems in the Italian vernacular. Today Alcamo is also known for its wine. Vineyards cover much of the surrounding countryside, and the white wine of the area carries the town's name.

Monte Bonifato
The mountain rises steeply to the south of Alcamo, forming a natural wall with winding roads running up its wooded sides.
Towards the gulf
The land slopes north to the Gulf of Castellammare, and roads lead down through vineyards to the coast at Alcamo Marina.
