Te mapa
Aldan is in the south of the Sakha Republic, in the Russian Far East, and it owes its existence to gold. Prospectors found rich deposits here in the 1920s, and the settlement that grew up around the diggings was first called Nezametny, meaning inconspicuous. It later took the name of the nearby Aldan River, and it remains a centre of gold mining today.
From above, the town fills a valley among forested hills. Its streets follow the lie of the land in long, gently curving lines, and blocks of Soviet-era housing sit among older wooden districts. The federal highway linking Yakutsk to the south passes through, a strong line connecting the town to the wider region.
An Aldan map poster shows a place built quickly around a resource and then kept alive through long winters. Streets end abruptly against the forest, old mine workings mark the outskirts, and the road runs north and south into open taiga. The composition is spare and linear, with a sense of distance at its edges.
The town stretches along a valley floor between wooded slopes. Its streets curve with the terrain and give the map a long, flowing shape.
The main road to Yakutsk and the south runs through Aldan. It is a clear, continuous line that links the town to the rest of Siberia.
Streets stop suddenly where the forest begins. The wide unbuilt margins show how isolated the town is in its landscape.

Koteā ko Aldan
Aldan draws people with family ties to Yakutia's mining history, and people who have worked or grown up in the north. A map of the town is a way of keeping a remote, hard-won place close.
