Te mapa
Kansk grew up on the Kan River in the east of Krasnoyarsk Krai. The river runs through the city in wide loops, and the streets cluster along it in irregular blocks of low-rise houses and yards. Seen from above, water and gardens take up almost as much space as buildings. That makes the map light and open.
The Trans-Siberian Railway passes through the city, and its straight line contrasts with the curving river. Stations, sidings and industrial sites line up along the tracks. On the Kansk map poster the railway and the Kan act as two axes, one engineered and one natural. Most of the town sits between them.
Kansk began in the seventeenth century as a Russian fortified outpost on the river. It later grew as a stop on the route east across Siberia. More recently it has been known for an international video art festival that has been held in the town. The surrounding land is flat to gently rolling, with fields and forest.
The river loops through and around the town, with channels and islands. It is the most expressive line on the map and gives the poster its movement.
The main railway crosses the city in a straight line. Rail yards and sidings form a band of parallel strokes along it.
Much of Kansk is private houses with yards. On paper this becomes a fine, even texture of small blocks that is very different from a dense city core.

Koteā ko Kansk
For people from Kansk, or anyone who has travelled the Trans-Siberian and stopped here, this map is a quiet reminder of a particular stretch of Siberia. The river and the railway tell the story without any words.
You can set your own title and subtitle, keep or change the coordinates line, and pick one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Noir works well if you want the river to stand out.
