Te mapa
Ust’-Ilimsk stands on the Angara River in the north of Irkutsk Oblast, deep in the Siberian taiga. From above it looks like a planned city, and it is one. Its large residential districts are made of long apartment blocks set around broad courtyards and linked by wide, straight avenues. Dense forest surrounds the built area on every side, and the river runs as a wide ribbon beside it.
The city was built from the 1960s onwards together with the Ust-Ilimsk hydroelectric station, whose dam holds back a large reservoir on the Angara. The old settlement at the mouth of the Ilim River was flooded when the reservoir filled. Timber processing, including a large pulp mill, became the other pillar of the local economy.
A Ust’-Ilimsk map poster captures an unusual kind of urban landscape: an orderly, modernist street plan set in an almost unbroken forest. The river and reservoir give the map a strong horizontal line, and the neat residential districts stand out clearly against the empty space around them. It is a spare, graphic print with a story of Soviet-era construction behind it.
The river cuts a wide, smooth band across the map, and the reservoir behind the dam spreads the water into a broader shape upstream.
Residential areas were laid out as large superblocks with long apartment buildings, straight avenues and generous open courtyards, a clear example of Soviet planning.
The street grid ends abruptly at the forest. Beyond the city, only a few roads and industrial sites cross the blank expanse of taiga.

Koteā ko Ust’-Ilimsk
Many people who grew up in or helped build Ust’-Ilimsk now live far away. A map of the districts and the river is a simple way to keep that history visible, a reminder of a city that was carved out of the forest within living memory.
Personalise the poster with a title, a subtitle such as the year you arrived, and the coordinates. The five styles, Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, range from a stark engineering look to something softer.
