Te mapa
Chita lies in Russia's Transbaikal region, east of Lake Baikal, where the small Chita River flows into the Ingoda. Its centre is laid out as a regular grid of straight streets and rectangular blocks, a plan drawn up in the nineteenth century. The grid stops at the rivers and the rising hills. Wooded ridges and suburbs spread out beyond it.
The town is closely tied to the Decembrists, the officers exiled to Siberia after the failed 1825 uprising. Several of them lived here, and the wooden church associated with them still stands. Chita later became a major stop on the Trans-Siberian Railway, and the line's long curve through the city is easy to pick out on a map.
A Chita map poster shows how orderly the old plan is. Even blocks are framed by the loops of two rivers and the sweep of the railway. To the west, Lake Kenon sits just outside the centre as a smooth open shape. That combination of strict geometry and open Siberian landscape gives the city a character all its own on paper.
The Chita River runs through the city and joins the wider Ingoda to the south. Together they form the curving lower boundary of the street grid.
The railway sweeps through Chita in a long arc. It cuts across the grid and gives the poster a strong diagonal among the straight nineteenth-century streets.
West of the centre, Lake Kenon appears as a broad, calm shape. Its shoreline stands out against the denser districts and the industrial areas beside it.

Koteā ko Chita
People hang Chita for many reasons: a hometown in Transbaikal, a stop on a Trans-Siberian journey, or family history reaching back to the Decembrist exile. The clear grid also makes it simply a handsome piece of graphic design.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with the date you passed through by train. Then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits the planned, almost engineered look of the centre.
