Te mapa
Yakeshi lies in Hulunbuir, in the north-east of Inner Mongolia, on the western slopes of the Greater Khingan mountains. The town grew up along the railway that crosses this region towards the Russian border, and the tracks still define its layout. Streets run parallel to the line along the valley floor.
For much of the twentieth century, Yakeshi was a centre of the region's forestry industry, and wooded hills surround the town on the map. Winters here are long and severe, among the coldest of any Chinese city, and the landscape shifts to open grassland farther west, towards Hailar.
A Yakeshi map poster shows a linear town: a band of streets and blocks following the railway and river through a valley, with forest and hills pressing in on either side. The shape is simple and elongated. It makes a quiet, distinctive image of a place that few people outside the region know.
The main line through the Greater Khingan crosses the town in a long, straight stroke. Much of the street layout is organised parallel to it.
The built-up area is stretched along the valley floor, producing a narrow, elongated urban shape rather than a compact centre.
Wooded slopes surround the town on both sides and are left largely blank, emphasising the thin line of settlement between them.

Koteā ko Yakeshi
Yakeshi is home for families with roots in the forestry towns of the north, many of whom have since moved south. A map of the valley and railway keeps that northern landscape present in a calm, graphic way.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can be changed to any text you choose. Five styles are available: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Noir suits the long winter nights.
