Alhandra is in Paraíba, south of João Pessoa and a short distance inland from the Atlantic coast. The town's map shows a small centre of streets around a church square, surrounded by large, regular fields. The town, which shares its name with a town in Portugal, is widely associated with the Jurema tradition, an Afro-Indigenous Brazilian religious practice with deep roots in this area. Remnants of Atlantic Forest and small river valleys break up the farmland around it.
