Altus lies in Jackson County in southwestern Oklahoma, on the level plains near the Texas border. From above, the town is a clear street grid spreading across open land, with farm roads extending straight in every direction and cotton and wheat fields beyond the edges.
The name Altus, from the Latin for high, recalls the town's founding in 1891, when settlers moved to higher ground after a flood struck the nearby settlement of Frazer. Altus Air Force Base, a major training centre for large transport aircraft, lies on the northeast side of town, its runways a defining feature on the map.
