Te mapa
Oklahoma City covers an unusually large area, more than six hundred square miles, and most of it follows the survey grid of the Great Plains. Section-line roads run a mile apart in both directions. Interstates 35, 40 and 44 meet near the centre, and the Oklahoma River, a channelled stretch of the North Canadian, cuts across the south side of downtown.
The city was founded almost overnight in the Land Run of 1889, when settlers raced to claim unassigned land. Oil later shaped its growth, and working wells have stood on the grounds of the State Capitol. Downtown, the Bricktown Canal passes old warehouses, and the Myriad Botanical Gardens form a green block among the towers.
An Oklahoma City map poster shows grid planning at scale. Lake Hefner and Lake Overholser sit in the north-west as smooth pale shapes, the river draws a curving line across the grid, and the highways give it structure. It is a bold, open design that looks clean at any size.

The river runs across the south of downtown, straightened into a managed channel used for rowing, and forms the main natural line through the city.
Lake Hefner and Lake Overholser are large reservoirs on the city's north-west side, adding broad open shapes that contrast with the dense grid.
