Te mapa
Amaravati is the planned capital of Andhra Pradesh, being built on the southern bank of the Krishna River across from Vijayawada. Unlike most Indian cities, its map is being drawn from scratch. Long, straight arterial roads and a regular grid of sectors are being set out across what were recently the fields and villages of the Guntur region.
The name comes from the historic town of Amaravathi, a short way upriver. A great Buddhist stupa stood there from the early centuries BCE, and its sculptures are now held in museums in India and abroad. The new city draws on that association. It is organised around a government complex, with open space planned along the river.
An Amaravati map poster records a city at an early stage: ruled road lines, planned blocks, the broad Krishna with its sandbanks, and surviving villages whose older street patterns are still visible. It is an unusual subject. It suits people involved in the project, families from the area, and anyone interested in how new capitals take shape.
The wide Krishna forms the northern edge of the capital area. Its sandbanks and islands shift with the seasons and dominate the top of the poster.
New arterial roads cross the site in long straight lines and divide it into regular sectors. The result is an unusually geometric structure for an Indian city.
Older villages remain scattered within the planned area. Their compact, irregular street patterns stand out clearly against the new grid.

Amaravati is still being built, and a map of it captures a moment that will change. For people from the region, or those working on its construction, it becomes a record of a place in the making.
