Te mapa
Amecameca lies in the southeast of the State of Mexico, at the base of the two great volcanoes, Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. The town sits on the high valley floor, and from above its streets form a fairly regular colonial grid around a central plaza. To the east the land rises steadily toward the volcanic slopes, and the road network thins into forest and farmland.
Right beside the centre stands the Sacromonte, a steep wooded hill crowned by a sanctuary, which appears on the map as a distinct green island encircled by streets. Main roads run north toward the Valley of Mexico and south toward Morelos, while smaller routes climb east toward the mountain pass between the two volcanoes.
Amecameca has long been a starting point for journeys to the volcanoes, including the road up to Paso de Cortés. An Amecameca map poster shows a colonial grid, a sacred hill and roads heading toward two of the highest peaks in Mexico.
Streets around the main plaza follow a regular rectangular pattern, the familiar layout of central Mexican towns founded in the colonial period.
The wooded hill beside the centre breaks the grid, appearing as a rounded open shape with paths winding up toward the sanctuary.
Eastward routes climb from the town into forested slopes, pointing the composition toward the high country of Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl.
