Te mapa
Anadyr is the administrative centre of Chukotka, the easternmost town in Russia, on the Anadyr estuary not far from the Bering Sea. Founded in 1889 as Novo-Mariinsk, it grew into a compact town of apartment blocks built on permafrost. Many stand on piles so their heat does not thaw the ground beneath them. On a map the town fills a small, neat patch of land beside a very large body of water.
That imbalance is what makes the drawing striking. The street grid is short and orderly and stops abruptly at the tundra, while the estuary takes up much of the frame as blank open water. Across the water lies Ugolnye Kopi, home to the airport, so arriving travellers usually cross the estuary to reach town. The map shows the edge of a continent at close range.
An Anadyr map poster is a fitting keepsake for anyone who has lived or worked in Chukotka, or for people drawn to far-north places. Anadyr is known for its brightly painted facades, a deliberate answer to the long winter, and for Holy Trinity Cathedral, one of the largest wooden churches in Russia. In black and white the story comes down to line and water: a small town holding a large shore.
The wide mouth of the Anadyr River dominates the composition, a broad expanse of open water beside the town that sets its scale and turns the settlement into a small, clearly bounded shape.
The town is built as a short, regular grid of streets and apartment blocks. The whole of it fits comfortably in one frame, with little sprawl before the land turns to tundra.
On the opposite shore sits Ugolnye Kopi and its airport. The crossing between the two banks is part of everyday life here, and the map shows both sides together.

Koteā ko Anadyr
Some maps are hung because a place is familiar, others because it is remote. Anadyr is both for people who spent years there, and for many others it marks the end of the road east. The print keeps that far shore in view on an ordinary wall.
Personalise the title, the subtitle and the coordinates line, perhaps with a posting, a year, or the town's old name. The map comes in five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Blueprint and Noir suit the cold water especially well.
