Te mapa
Vaygach Island lies in the Russian Arctic between the Pechora Sea, part of the Barents Sea, and the Kara Sea. It is separated from the mainland by the Yugorsky Strait to the south and from Novaya Zemlya by the Kara Gates to the north. From above it is a broad, elongated shape, low and flat, with a ragged coastline of bays and points.
The island is covered in tundra and marked by countless small lakes and streams, which give the map a delicate, scattered texture. There are almost no roads. A small settlement, Varnek, sits on the southern coast near the Yugorsky Strait. Low ridges run across the interior, but most of the island is open ground without trees.
For the Nenets people, Vaygach has long been a sacred island, with ritual sites and carved wooden idols recorded by early travellers. Much of it is now protected. A Vaygach Island map poster turns this remote landscape into a fine study of lakes and coast, a place few people will ever visit but many find compelling.
The narrow strait separating Vaygach from the mainland to the south. On the poster it forms a thin channel of water running along the island's southern edge.
To the north, a wider strait separates Vaygach from Novaya Zemlya and links the Barents and Kara seas. It frames the island's northern end on the map.
Small lakes and streams are scattered across the flat interior. In black and white they create an intricate pattern, the main source of detail on the whole map.
